Soft Power Records News!
Soft Power Records announces the upcoming releases of two cassettes from two different but awesome bands. Let’s dive into both!
– The first cassette is a single from the band HUNK!, entitled “Dupe / Hold Out.” It’s coming your way on Dec. 17th via a limited edition of 100 (with a digital download copy). Oh, and did I mention that this is the band’s debut single? The A-side is described as “a pretty giddy headrush of a song with lots of girlie vocals and spiky guitars” and I have to agree. Right away, it’s in your face. The guitars are heavy indie garage machines and the vocals remind me of the Breeders, the Pixies and Splendora mixed together with a shot of whiskey. Hot and wild stuff. The B-side slows things down a little bit but really hits on the awesome vocal harmonies. Before long, the tempo picks up and things get spiked, loud and melodious. These are both amazingly killer tracks. You’d be a fool not to get this cassette single. A fool, I say! If this is the band’s debut, I can hardly wait for the next release!
– The second release is from The Spook School, and it certainly has made an impact! This comes on the heels of the band’s 7” single debut from Cloudberry Records. This cassette is entitled, “I Don’t Know, You Don’t Know, We All Don’t Know The Spook School,” and it’s a five-track EP. This is, again, a cassette limited to just 100 copies. The genre here is more or less C86 driven indie pop. And yes, this is awesome. Seriously, I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Soft Power has a knack for finding the most interesting new music. This is no exception! At times, this leans on punk elements so it winds up sounding like what would happen if you mixed The Smiths and The Vaselines in a blender. It’s raw, melodic and my God, is it fun! Much like the Vaselines, there’s male and female vocals leaping to life, giving this a punky-indie-C86-pop feel that’s irresistible. There’s not a single weak spot on this EP and it’s no wonder that Soft Power ran out of copies. If you hunt on some of their distributors’ sites (links on their Facebook), you might be able to snag a copy. Do it now as I know for sure they will not last long!
I give both cassettes 5 out of 5.
